Tax Commissioner Releases Second Quarter 2026 Taxable Sales Data
Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus has announced that North Dakota’s taxable sales and purchases for the second quarter of 2026 increased by 3.86 percent compared to the same period in 2025. For April, May, and June of 2026, taxable sales and purchases totaled $7.39 billion versus $7.11 billion in the prior year.
Retail trade, the state’s largest revenue category, posted a positive result, growing by 4.4 percent compared to the same timeframe in 2025. Other top revenue producing categories, Real Estate and Accommodations, rose by 4.7 percent and 1.4 percent respectively. Mining and Oil and Gas Extraction declined by 8.8 percent.
Second quarter economic activity demonstrated a modest increase overall, in part due to several large-scale industrial projects occurring in the state during the reporting timeframe,” said Kroshus. “The associated ripple effect from those projects often times influences performance in other categories, including retail trade and manufacturing, which was certainly the case this past quarter.”
Categories exhibiting growth over prior year in the 2nd quarter:
- Manufacturing - Increase 70.6%
- Transportation and Warehousing - Increase of 16.7%
- Admin and Support, Waste Management and Remediation - Increase of 14.6%
- Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services - Increase of 8.7%
- Retail Trade - Increase of 4.4%
Categories posting declines versus prior year during the 2nd quarter:
- Utilities - Decrease of 31.0%
- Oil, Gas, and Mining - Decrease of 8.8%
- Health Care and Social Assistance - Decrease of 19.1%
- Information and Cultural Industries - Decrease of 13.7%
“One of our more notable categories, oil, gas, and mining, posted a decrease in Q2 primarily due to oil market price uncertainty attributable to geopolitical events in the Middle East,” said Kroshus. “Embedded in that category are two of our state’s top five economic segments, both directly influenced not only by price, but degree of market stability.”
Percent changes for the first quarter of 2026 (compared to the second quarter of 2025) for the largest cities in North Dakota were as follows:
- Bismarck – Increase of 0.9%
- Dickinson – Decrease of 0.1%
- Fargo – Increase of 3.6%
- Grand Forks – Increase of 1.6%
- Jamestown – Increase of 5.5%
- Minot – Decrease of 0.3%
- Williston – Decrease of 0.2%
Of the 50 largest communities in North Dakota, the highest percentage increases for the first quarter of 2026 (compared to the 2nd quarter of 2025) were as follows:
- Ellendale - Increase of 55.6%
- Crosby - Increase of 49.3%
- Mayville - Increase of 37.9%
- Casselton - Increase of 20.7%
- Cando - Increase of 12.9%
Counties with the highest percentage increases for the first quarter of 2026 (compared to the second quarter of 2025) were as follows:
- Divide County - Increase of 44.8%
- Traill County - Increase of 27.3%
- Dickey County - Increase of 25.5%
- McHenry County - Increase of 12.4%
- Pierce County - Increase of 12.3%
Sales tax collections administered by the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner represent a significant portion of all general fund revenue collections used to support essential services provided by state government to the citizens of North Dakota.
